Focal Shift Drill – Sight Reacquisition Target
The Focal Shift Drill is designed to train shooters to maintain visual discipline on their sights after target identification and between shots. A common failure—especially under stress—is shifting visual focus to the target after the first shot, causing follow-up shots to become unsighted and inconsistent.
This drill deliberately forces the shooter to cycle focus from target identification back to sight alignment on every shot, building the habit of disciplined sight usage even during transitions.
Task
-Choose either numerical order or alphabetical order on the target.
-Identify the first number or letter.
-Align sights and place full visual focus on the front sight or red dot.
-Fire one controlled shot.
-Shift focus back to the target to identify the next number or letter.
-Once identified, shift focus back to the sights and fire.
-Continue this process until all designated numbers or letters are completed.
Every shot should include:
- Target identification
- Sight alignment
- Proper sight focus
- Controlled trigger press
Do not rush this drill. Visual discipline is the objective.
